Get an American Scholarship!

Many female rowers from Porirua have gone on to receive rowing scholarships from American Universities. It is a lot more difficult for males because American Universities invest into male Basketball and American Football. To help provide equity, female Rowing is one of the sports that was chosen to receive investment. If someone wants to put in the effort, the Porirua Rowing Club have the know-how to develop your rowing so you can apply for a scholarship.

Olivia Taylor’s Journey Porirua Rowing Club 2013 – 2017

I joined learn-to-row at Porirua in the beginning of 2013 and have loved rowing ever since. After my novice season I trained with Tim Parker until 2017. One of the many highlights during this time was earning a silver medal in the club four at 2017 nationals with some of my best friends.

With the help of Tim and Kiwi Athletes Agency I got a full ride rowing scholarship to Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA. While studying and rowing in the US I got to race at many awesome regattas including Head of the Charles – that was truly an awesome experience.

I graduated in 2021 with a B.S and a B.A and now I live in California where I’m studying towards a PhD in organic chemistry.

I am super grateful for all the opportunities rowing at Porirua has given me and although I don’t row competitively anymore I still enjoy going for a row whenever I am back visiting Porirua.
