What is Learn to Row (LTR)?

The Learn to ROW course will teach you everything needed to give you the skills and confidence to be able to feel safe, have fun, and enjoy your rowing. This course is aimed at year 9 and 10 students, but anyone who is currently at secondary school can enrol.

When is it?

Learn to ROW training sessions are held over a five-week period from Tuesday 27 August – Thursday 26 September. The training sessions are at the following times:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays 5.30 – 7.30pm
  • Saturdays 8.00 – 10.00am

This includes time to get boats on/off the water, warmup and stretching. As you get faster at moving around and getting into boats, on-water sessions would normally take 1.5hours. If it is too rough to row, land training is about 1 hour. Parents are welcome to stay and watch and see what the sessions are all about. A lot of parents use the time to go for a walk around the local esturay or get some odd-jobs out of the way.

What will you learn?

During the Learn to ROW course our experienced coaching team will teach you everything needed to give you the necessary skills and confidence to be able to feel safe, have fun, and enjoy your rowing. Rowing is a highly technical sport, and athletes spend years trying to perfect their technique and achieve the “perfect” stroke. Even Olympic gold medallists still have technical improvements to make! After 5 weeks, a rower won’t be proficient – but it’s usually enough to get hooked on the sport!

Whanganui Camp: At the end of term 3 there will be a camp in Whanganui for you to get on the river to further improve your skills. This camp is a great opportunity to develop camaraderie between participants and establish a robust team culture. Camp dates: leave after school on Friday 27 – Monday 30 September, return to Porirua 6pm.

How much to do this course?

This five-week course is $50, spots are limited, and payment is required when completing enrolment. The cost of the camp component is a further $150, for those attending, payment will be confirmed after the 3rd week of the course.

Please note: If you choose to join the PRC 2024-25 Novice Squad at the completion of the Learn to ROW course, your $50 LTR fee is deducted from your competitive membership subscription fees. The cost for the camp component is excluded from this offer.

What you need to do (committment)

We are aware that some winter sports and away-tournaments are occuing over the learn to row course. This is not a problem in terms of signing up and then needing to be away for a week or missing sessions.

The purpose of the course is to learn and feel what rowing is about, which you will still get. The aim is that you will enjoy it so much, you’ll want to keep rowing over the school summer break and have something to keep you busy in the 2024-25 Novice Squad! (Click the link to learn what a ‘novice’ is.) Your skills will be developed over the novice season.

Having said that, spots are limited and rowing is the ultimate team sport. If you are sick or are going to be late notify your coach. If coaches are kept informed, they can make the necessary changes.
