It’s Tony Tikiku, the President and one of the many volunteers. Here’s an update of happenings in September 2023:

Club Race day

We welcomed September by holding a fun race-day within the club on Sunday the 3rd, with a bbq on the go. A lot of fun was had by all.

Learn to Row(students)

Over 20 students signed up and have been learning to row. We extended the LTR into the school holidays.

New Grant!

Trust House Foundation

 

 

 

Fantastic news. We applied and received $12k to pay for insurance and some operating costs. Grants help keep operating costs low, allow us to improve the facilities which means we can keep our subscriptions low, attract more people and offer them a better experience.

Patron of the Porirua Rowing Club

Mayor Anita Baker has confirmed she will be the Patron of the Porirua Rowing Club for the year. This is especially important to have the Mayor helping and guide our Club to put on a fantastic NZ Beach Sprint Coastal Rowing Championships next May. We need to do the City of Porirua proud as we want a coastal regatta to be a regular event in our City.

Gratitude

Rowing NZ held a national competition to give away a jacket to the Rowing Coach that got the most instgram or facebook mentions. We put the word out and our Club Captain and coach, Jono Debbage, recieved over 40 comments. Our small Club nearly won the jacket for Jono! This effort is a great pat on the back and thank you to Jono for all his volunteer work.

There are a lot of volunteers including our coaching squad, committee members and other rowers who cover other roles and just help out around the club. We will put up profiles soon of these volunteers.

While we are talking about gratitude, a quiet thanks every so often to these volunteers when you are down at the club goes a long way :).

In recognition of our volunteers and the work they are doing, the committee have approved the purchase of bucket hats for our volunteers. OK maybe they are not the most fashionable but they are low cost, provide sun protection and our volunteers can wear a PRC logo item at regattas etc.

Plan for the Future?

Oct 23

  • Establish Novice squads, intermediate squads and adult squads as well
  • Advertise new LTR for adult
  • Training camp at Whanganui
  • Run the Porirua Goodwill Regatta on Saturday 28th Oct at Porirua Harbour

Nov

  • run the month long Learn to Row for Adults
